"The Falklands YL Expedition" Nicky Marriott M5YLO

Talk to BRS by guest speaker from the Blackmore Vale Amateur Radio Society
on Friday 2nd October 2009.

Recently John M1BAI received a very warm welcome when he visited the Blackmore Vale ARS to give a talk on Narrow Band TV. So we were delighted to see many more members than usual at Friday's meeting to welcome Nicky and Tony.

Nicky told us that never having flown anywhere - in fact not having been outside the UK before - she felt she could be biting off more than she could chew when she decided to join the YL Expedition to the Falkland Islands. However, overcoming all obstacles - panic, money, distance etc - she arrived at Port Stanley on Saturday 17th January 2009 to be part of an impressive YLO (Young Lady Operator) DX team - logging more than 25,000 contacts with 53 countries in two weeks. This is the first time this has been done in the Falklands with YLs only.

Their website has lots of photographs and information about the expedition.

Proof that Nicky was not content to settle down and take things easy on her return to the UK - she will be talking about her "Radio Adventures in Scandinavia" at Blackmore Vale ARS Open Day on Saturday 24th October,
